Iwan Smit
Iwan Smit (Rotterdam, 1989) initially pursued drawing and studied Illustration and Fine Arts at the Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam. However, he realized that his desire to convey three-dimensionality found its true expression in spatial objects. His art gracefully balances weighty themes with playfulness, resulting in colorful creations tinged with a subtle dark edge. Smit's signature style transcends highbrow art, appearing in retail, product design, and more. Whether it's a series of light sculptures or a mural painting, he embraces creative challenges. His work serves as a channel for past experiences, exploring fear, mortality, and legacy, interweaving personal and collective beliefs, often examining mythological symbols to craft unique narratives. In 2017, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen acquired his painting 'The Mystical Birth of Rotterdam', later followed by the ‘Trinity’ light sculpture in 2019.
